Causes of Heart Disease – Fit Body and Health

Different heart diseases have different causes as shown below;

Causes of cardiovascular disease

Development of atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis is a condition whereby fat accumulates in the arteries. With time, this accumulation thickens arterial walls, making it difficult for blood to flow. This condition is caused by lifestyle habits that can lead to building up of fat, such as smoking, obesity, lack of exercise and eating unhealthy food.

Causes of heart arrhythmia
• High blood pressure
• Smoking
• Congenital heart defects (those you are born with)
• Coronary artery disease
• Diabetes
• Smoking
• Excessive use of alcohol
• Drug abuse
• Diabetes
• Stress
• Valvular heart disease

Causes of congenital heart defects
Congenital heart defects may develop as early as before the child is born or a month after birth. These defects may be caused by genes, medical conditions or certain medications.

Causes of cardiomyopathy
Dilated cardiomyopathy
The cause is not clearly known but it is associated with reduced blood flow to the heart, toxins, certain drugs, and infections. The condition causes enlargement of the left ventricle and may be passed down from a parent to siblings.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
This causes abnormal thickening of the heart muscle and is often inherited. May also be caused by hypertension or old age.

Restrictive Cardiomyopathy
Reduces elasticity of the heart muscle and its cause is not clearly known, but it’s linked to connective tissue disorder and too much iron and protein accumulation.
Causes of a heart infection
• Bacteria
• Viruses
• Parasites

Causes of valvular heart disease
• Rheumatic fever
• Connective tissue disorders
• Infectious endocarditis
